A baboon model for endometriosis: implications for fertility

This review describes an experimentally induced baboon model of endometriosis developed to overcome ethical and practical barriers to long-term studies in women, using intraperitoneal inoculation of autologous menstrual endometrium harvested during menses and followed by serial laparoscopies for up to 15 months. In 24 female Papio anubis baboons, inoculation produced endometriotic lesions with gross morphologies similar to human disease in all animals, with lesion pigmentation shifting over time and most ectopic lesions containing both glands and stroma; the authors also report gene/protein dysregulation in eutopic and ectopic endometrium involving invasion, angiogenesis, methylation, cell growth, immunomodulation, and steroid hormone action. A key limitation is that prior models, including rodents, differ from human biology (e.g., lack of menstrual cycling), and even some non-human primate induction approaches yielded incomplete incidence or required specific manipulations.
