Tumor necrosis factor alpha secretion by peritoneal macrophages in patients with endometriosis
Peritoneal macrophages from endometriosis patients exhibited significantly higher TNF-α secretion than controls, correlating with disease activity and stage.

This study examined whether peritoneal macrophages from women with endometriosis secrete higher levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and whether TNF-α secretion correlates with endometriosis activity. During infertility work-up, 100 women undergoing diagnostic laparoscopy were grouped into an endometriosis-free control group and three endometriosis groups spanning increasing rAFS stages/activity based on macroscopic assessment, and TNF-α concentrations were compared, with results also stated as being in accordance with histological findings. TNF-α secretion by peritoneal macrophages was significantly higher in patients with proven endometriosis than controls, increasing across groups (from a median 6.2 pg/ml in controls up to 200.15 pg/ml in advanced stages), and the authors concluded TNF-α may reflect both activity and stage. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it measures TNF-α secretion by peritoneal macrophages across endometriosis stages and activity.
