This retrospective comparative study examined immunohistochemical alterations of pacemaker cells termed cajal-like type of tubal interstitial cells (t-ICC) in full-thickness oviduct specimens from 10 women with early-stage endometriosis (EMs), 10 with unruptured tubal ectopic pregnancy (tEP), and 10 controls, using c-kit/CD117 staining and image-based analysis of t-ICC network distribution and area density. The authors found that in EMs and tEP, t-ICC largely lost network integrity, showed decreased staining density, appeared sparse or nearly invisible, and had few connections compared with control tissue with rich staining and intact networks. Quantitatively, t-ICC area density was significantly lower in EMs and tEP than in controls. The paper concludes that reduced t-ICC network may contribute to tubal factor infertility in these conditions, but it is limited by its small, retrospective sample size. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it directly investigates t-ICC immunohistochemical damage in women with early-stage endometriosis and links reduced t-ICC networks to tubal factor infertility.
