Epidemiologic factors associated with endometriosis in East Asia
This review examined East Asian endometriosis literature from 2000-2016, finding limited prevalence data and associations with short cycles, family history, genetic polymorphisms, smoking, low BMI, and low parity.

This paper is a systematic review of English-language human studies (2000–2016) assessing epidemiology and risk factors for endometriosis in East Asian populations, using Medline/PubMed/Cochrane searches and inclusion of studies reporting prevalence, incidence, or correlating inherited, lifestyle, and environmental factors; adenomyosis was excluded. Among 22 eligible articles, most were retrospective cohort or case–control designs, allowing very limited incidence/prevalence estimation, with only one self-report nurse survey in Japan providing a prevalence figure that was largely confirmed by laparoscopy. The review reports mixed findings: several genetic polymorphisms (e.g., CDKN2B-AS, WNT4, and multiple estrogen metabolism-related variants) showed positive associations, while some reported “no association” variants existed; environmental factors were less consistently characterized, with cigarette smoking reported as increased risk in one surgically confirmed Japanese study, and certain pollutants showing minimal differences in infertile samples. Relevance to endometriosis: the paper centers on endometriosis epidemiologic factors in East Asia, explicitly reviewing risk associations across demographic, environmental, and genetic domains, and noting that these evidence are limited by study design and causality inference.
