Cytokine and immune cell levels in peritoneal fluid and peripheral blood of women with early- and late-staged endometriosis
This study investigated cytokine and immune cell levels in peritoneal fluid and peripheral blood across different stages of endometriosis but found no significant differences between groups.

This prospective study compared cytokine levels and immune cell subsets in peripheral blood and peritoneal fluid from 97 women, including histopathologically confirmed endometriosis cases categorized by rASRM stage (early I/II vs late III/IV) and a control group without endometriosis. Peripheral blood serum was analyzed by ELISA for IL-2, IL-4, IL-10, and IFN-γ, while peritoneal fluid underwent the same cytokine measurements; immune phenotyping used multiparameter flow cytometry with markers for T cell subsets, NK cells, B cells, and activation antigens (e.g., CD-69 and HLA-DR). The study found no significant differences in cytokine concentrations or immune cell levels between controls and early- or late-staged endometriosis groups (p > 0.05). The paper’s main limitation is its null results for measured cytokines and lymphocyte subsets despite using relatively specific immune markers and single pre-surgery sampling. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it directly measures cytokines and immune cell profiles in peritoneal fluid and peripheral blood across early- versus late-staged disease.
