The bidirectional relationship between endometriosis and microbiome
This study reviews the bidirectional relationship between the microbiome and endometriosis, highlighting how dysbiosis contributes to and results from endometriosis-associated inflammation and exploring potential microbiome-based detection and treatment strategies.

This paper reviews evidence that endometriosis, characterized as a chronic inflammatory condition driven by immune dysfunction, may have a bidirectional relationship with microbiome dysbiosis across the gut, peritoneal fluid, and female reproductive tract. It synthesizes mechanistic ideas linking altered microbes to inflammatory pathways and immune changes, including findings from animal models where antibiotic treatment reduced lesion size and fecal microbiota transfer restored lesions and inflammation, while also discussing gut and reproductive tract microbiota differences reported in human studies and a 2019 systematic review. A key limitation is that it often cannot determine whether microbiome changes are a cause or consequence of endometriosis, and the review nature of the paper means heterogeneity and inconsistent findings are possible. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it focuses on the bidirectional relationship between endometriosis and microbiome alterations across multiple body sites.
