This 2021 international consensus terminology paper studied how to standardize definitions and outcome measures for endometriosis by creating structured terms covering endometriosis and its subtypes/locations, anatomical spaces where lesions may be detected, treatments and interventions, and trial outcome parameters. The authors used an international working group approach, extracting and adapting definitions from key literature, then conducting a stakeholder review with 160 comments from collaborating organizations and experts before finalizing the terminology. A major limitation explicitly acknowledged is that some proposed refinements (e.g., focusing the definition on fibrotic nature) require further evidence, and the paper also notes that lesion depth in millimeters may be difficult to measure accurately, leading to suggested alternatives in some definitions. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it provides an international standardized terminology and definitions to improve consistency across research and clinical studies of endometriosis.
