N-Acetyl-Cysteine and l-Carnitine Prevent Meiotic Oocyte Damage Induced by Follicular Fluid From Infertile Women With Mild Endometriosis
Follicular fluid from infertile women with mild endometriosis induced meiotic abnormalities in bovine oocytes, which were prevented by N-acetyl-cysteine and l-carnitine.

This experimental study assessed whether the antioxidants l-carnitine (LC) and N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) could protect meiotic competence of oocytes exposed to follicular fluid (FF) from infertile women with mild endometriosis (ME), compared with FF from women without endometriosis. FF from 22 women (11 with ME, 11 controls) was used to challenge immature bovine oocytes during in vitro maturation in multiple treatment groups, followed by confocal immunostaining of microtubules and chromatin; the authors explicitly note that oocytes were bovine and experiments were in vitro. The percentage of normal metaphase II (MII) oocytes was significantly reduced with ME-derived FF (51.35%) versus no-FF or control FF, while LC, NAC, or combined treatments partially restored normal MII, with LC performing best among the tested single-antioxidant approaches. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it tests whether NAC and l-carnitine prevent meiotic abnormalities induced by follicular fluid from women with mild endometriosis.
