Role of Interleukin-6 and Its Receptor in Endometriosis
This study found increased activated macrophages, IL-6, and IL-6 receptor in the peritoneal fluid of endometriosis patients, suggesting IL-6R promotes endometriosis development by enhancing IL-6 bioactivity.

This laboratory research evaluated the role of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and its receptor (IL-6R) in endometriosis by examining activated macrophages and membrane-bound IL-6R in peritoneal fluid using flow cytometry, and measuring IL-6 and soluble IL-6R levels in peritoneal fluid and plasma using ELISA. The study found increased activated macrophages and membrane IL-6R in endometriosis, alongside higher IL-6 and soluble IL-6R in peritoneal fluid, with the plasma showing increased IL-6 and decreased soluble IL-6R. When stratifying endometriosis patients by retrospective AFS score, peritoneal fluid soluble IL-6R was significantly higher in group B than in group A and controls, and the authors concluded that increased peritoneal soluble IL-6R may enhance IL-6 bioactivity and promote endometriosis development. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it focuses on IL-6 and IL-6R dysregulation in the peritoneal environment.
