Inflammatory cytokine profile of VEGF and IL-6 from the endometrium of women with and without endometriosis

This study measured serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 using ELISA in 34 women with surgically confirmed endometriosis, 16 women with adenomyosis, and 18 age-matched healthy controls without clinical evidence of disease. VEGF and IL-6 were both significantly higher in the endometriosis group than in adenomyosis and controls, with reported mean values of 3887 ng/L vs 2588 ng/L (VEGF) and 90.49 pg/mL vs 70.37 pg/mL (IL-6). The authors conclude that these cytokines may be involved in implantation and lesion development, and that IL-6 could serve as a non-invasive diagnostic marker, while the work’s caveats include its relatively small sample size and cross-sectional measurement without mechanistic testing.
