Length of Menstrual Cycle and Risk of Endometriosis
This meta-analysis found that shorter menstrual cycles (≤27 days) increase the risk of endometriosis, while longer cycles (≥29 days) decrease the risk.

This meta-analysis synthesized case–control studies published from 1993 to July 2014 that examined the relationship between menstrual cycle length and surgically confirmed endometriosis, including 11 eligible studies (3392 cases and 5006 controls) with odds ratios extracted and pooled using fixed- and random-effects models plus heterogeneity, sensitivity, and publication-bias assessments. The pooled results reported that women with menstrual cycle length ≤27 days (SEQ27) had increased endometriosis risk (OR 1.22, 95% CI 1.05–1.43), while those with cycle length ≥29 days (LEQ29) had lower risk (OR 0.68, 95% CI 0.48–0.96), and sensitivity analyses suggested robustness, with one study identified as a key source of heterogeneity. A major caveat is that heterogeneity persisted across studies and menstrual cycle length intervals were not uniform, and the analysis included only English-language case–control evidence with variable age reporting and cycle categorization. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it meta-analyzes how menstrual cycle length (≤27 vs ≥29 days) is associated with endometriosis risk.
