Effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation for endometriosis-associated pain

This retrospective study evaluated the effect and safety of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on endometriosis-associated pain in 154 female patients (ages 18–42) with histologically confirmed endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain, comparing 83 patients receiving NMES to 71 patients on a waiting list with no NMES. Pain (numerical rating scale, NRS; Endometriosis Symptom Severity score, ESSS) and quality of life (SF-36 physical and mental component summaries) were assessed before treatment and after 5 and 10 weeks, with adverse events recorded. After 5 weeks there were no significant between-group differences, while after 10 weeks the NMES group showed better outcomes for NRS and ESSS and improved SF-36 scores, with only mild/acceptable adverse events and no severe events reported. The study explicitly notes limitations including lack of a placebo control and no longer-term follow-up beyond 10 weeks, which constrains conclusions about efficacy.
