Current and Prospective Treatment of Adenomyosis
This review compares current medical and surgical adenomyosis treatments and concludes that further randomized trials are needed to develop a uniform treatment algorithm.

This narrative review examined current and prospective treatment modalities for adenomyosis by searching PubMed for English-language studies from 2000 to May 2021, including randomized trials, observational studies, and systematic reviews/meta-analyses, ultimately including 80 articles. Key findings across therapies included that NSAIDs primarily improved pain without affecting adenomyotic pathology, while suppressive hormonal treatments (e.g., GnRH agonists, progestins, and levonorgestrel IUD) reduced symptoms and, for some options, uterine size, though evidence quality varied and GnRH agonists were associated with more adverse effects. The review also reported limited but positive case-based evidence for GnRH antagonists (such as linzagolix/elagolix) and emphasized that management remains individualized because standardized guidelines are lacking.
