Decreased Expression of HOXA10 May Activate the Autophagic Process in Ovarian Endometriosis
Decreased HOXA10 expression in ovarian endometriomas was associated with upregulated autophagic biomarkers and negatively correlated with autophagy and serum CA125 levels.

The study investigated whether decreased HOXA10 is associated with altered autophagy in ovarian endometriosis, measuring autophagic biomarkers (beclin-1 and LC3-II) and HOXA10 protein by Western blot and HOXA10 mRNA by quantitative real-time PCR, alongside serum CA125 levels. Samples compared ovarian endometriomas, eutopic endometrium, and normal endometrium from women with endometriosis, and key findings showed that most autophagy-related markers were upregulated while HOXA10 protein and mRNA were decreased in ovarian endometriomas, with HOXA10 inversely correlated with autophagy signals. CA125 levels were higher with increased revised ASRM stage and correlated positively with LC3-II measures and negatively with HOXA10 gene expression, but the authors note that the CA125–autophagy–HOXA10 relationship requires additional research. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it links decreased HOXA10 to increased autophagic activity in ovarian endometriosis and relates these pathways to serum CA125.
