Role of cytokines in the endometrial-peritoneal cross-talk and development of endometriosis
This review examines how endometrial-peritoneal interactions, orchestrated by cytokines and adhesion molecules, contribute to endometriosis development and pathogenesis, using baboon models to study early lesion formation.

This review examines the role of cytokines in endometrial–peritoneal cross-talk and how these signaling interactions may contribute to the development of endometriosis. It describes how pro-inflammatory and chemoattractant cytokines coordinate interactions between menstrual endometrium and the peritoneal microenvironment, which may promote local inflammatory responses, including recruitment of activated macrophages and leukocytes, and thereby support lesion development. The authors highlight an in vivo primate model in which intrapelvic injection of menstrual endometrium in baboons enables study of early endometrial–peritoneal interactions within an in vivo culture microenvironment. As a review, it synthesizes existing evidence without presenting new experimental limitations beyond its narrative scope. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it specifically discusses cytokines coordinating endometrial–peritoneal interactions involved in endometriosis development.
