Do symptomatic endometriosis and uterine fibroids appear together?
This study investigated the co-occurrence of endometriosis and uterine fibroids in surgical patients and found that both conditions independently reduced female fertility.

This retrospective hospital-record study examined women aged ≥35 years who underwent surgery for symptomatic endometriosis or uterine fibroids at Oulu University Hospital between 1990 and 2005, using diagnoses from laparoscopy for endometriosis, preoperative transvaginal ultrasound for fibroids, and sterilization records as controls. Among 240 symptomatic fibroid patients, 19.6% also had endometriosis versus 5.5% in 183 controls, and among 182 symptomatic endometriosis patients, 25.8% also had fibroids versus 9.3% in controls; there were no cases with both conditions in the control group. Logistic regression showed that both diagnoses were independently associated with nulliparity (subfertility proxy), with multiple deliveries being less common in disease groups. The paper acknowledges a limitation that reliable endometriosis diagnosis depended on laparoscopy, making control-group selection challenging given both conditions’ frequent asymptomatic nature. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it tests whether symptomatic endometriosis and symptomatic uterine fibroids co-occur and whether each independently relates to subfertility.
