Strong Association Between Endometriosis and Symptomatic Leiomyomas
This retrospective study found that 87.1% of patients presenting with symptomatic leiomyomas also had a histology-proven diagnosis of endometriosis.

This retrospective study evaluated 208 women undergoing laparoscopic myomectomy or hysterectomy for symptomatic uterine leiomyomas (abnormal uterine bleeding, with frequent pelvic pain, and some infertility/dyspareunia), with no prior diagnosis of endometriosis. During surgery, surgeons performed laparoscopic assessment for endometriosis and removed suspicious lesions for histologic confirmation, using the revised ASRM classification to stage disease severity. Endometriosis was histologically confirmed in 181/208 (87.1%), with 51.3% having stage 3–4 disease, and 9 additional cases showed adenomyosis among those without observed endometriosis; 8.6% had fibroids only. The authors note limitations including retrospective design and population bias from a tertiary endometriosis referral center. Relevance to endometriosis: the paper is centrally about endometriosis coexisting with symptomatic leiomyomas, reporting high intraoperative prevalence and histologic confirmation plus associations with pelvic pain and age.
