Abstract
Endometriosis was first described in the medical literature more than 100 years ago, yet its etiology remains poorly understood. Nevertheless, a century of medical research has yielded a significantly greater understanding of the multiple processes which lead to the development of this disease. Contributing to this progress has been the use of chimeric models of experimental endometriosis in which human endometrial tissues are established as ectopic sites of growth in immunocompromised mice. Through these studies, many of which are detailed herein, we now have a much broader understanding of the role of the tissue phenotype and communication with the peritoneal microenvironment which either prevents or promotes development of this disease.
