Co‑existence of benign gynecological tumors with endometriosis in a group of 1,000 women

This retrospective study reviewed medical and pathological records of 1,000 surgically treated women with endometriosis from two geographic centers to assess whether endometriosis is associated with the risk of benign gynecologic tumors and to examine the distribution of endometrioma and other ovarian cysts by side. Histology confirmed endometriomas (n=295), adenomyosis (n=172), other ovarian cysts (n=173) including serous and dermoid cysts, and uterine leiomyomas (n=89), with endometrioma being the most frequent. The authors report a significantly higher proportion of left-sided endometriomas among unilateral cases (65.6% left vs 34.4% right) and a similar left-sided predominance for other ovarian cysts (60% vs 40%), and they conclude that endometriosis may be associated with increased risk of several benign tumors. A key limitation explicitly implied by the design is that the cohort includes only women with endometriosis who underwent surgical treatment and relies on retrospective record review. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it evaluates coexistence of benign gynecological tumors (including adenomyosis, ovarian cysts, and leiomyomas) in a large surgical cohort and analyzes the left–right distribution of endometriomas.
