Reduced Expression of αvβ3 Integrin in the Endometrium of Unexplained Infertility Patients with Recurrent IVF-ET Failures: Improvement by Danazol Treatment
Endometrial αvβ3 integrin expression was lower in unexplained infertility patients with recurrent IVF-ET failures, but increased following danazol treatment.

This prospective study evaluated endometrial integrin αvβ3 expression in mid-secretory endometrium from 10 fertile controls and 57 infertile patients with recurrent IVF-ET failures, comparing 22 patients with unexplained infertility versus 35 with explained infertility using semiquantitative immunohistochemical staining intensity. αvβ3 levels were lower in the unexplained infertility group than in fertile controls and than in patients with explained infertility, indicating a functional (but not morphological) endometrial defect as a potential contributor. Nine randomly selected unexplained infertility patients were treated with oral danazol for 12 weeks and showed a significant increase in αvβ3 staining after treatment. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it is not the study’s focus, but it is relevant because it measures endometrial integrin abnormalities and includes prior literature on aberrant integrin expression in endometriosis as context.
