Proteomic Biomarkers for Endometriosis
This review discusses proteomics technologies and biomarker results for endometriosis, aiming for a non- or semi-invasive diagnostic test, as current diagnosis relies on laparoscopy.

This chapter reviews proteomics approaches for endometriosis biomarker discovery, focusing on key technologies such as SELDI-TOF mass spectrometry and 2D DIGE and critically describing findings reported across studies. It discusses the biological context of endometriosis (ectopic endometrial-like tissue, estrogen dependence, and diagnosis by laparoscopy) and summarizes that, despite proteomics detecting differentially expressed proteins/peptides, no non- or semi-invasive proteomics-based diagnostic test has been established. A major limitation emphasized is that biomarker results have not yet translated into a reliable clinical test, and the chapter frames its purpose as technology appraisal and critical interpretation of existing evidence. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it is a proteomics biomarker review chapter evaluating methods and reported biomarker candidates for endometriosis diagnosis.
