Concentrations of Receptor for Advanced Glycation End Products, VEGF and CML in Plasma, Follicular Fluid, and Peritoneal Fluid in Women With and Without Endometriosis
Soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products and vascular endothelial growth factor concentrations were significantly increased in the follicular fluid of women with endometriosis compared to those without.

This study measured soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and carboxymethyl lysine (CML) in plasma, follicular fluid, and peritoneal fluid collected from women with endometriosis and women without it, using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. VEGF and sRAGE were similar in plasma between groups, but both were significantly higher in follicular fluid from endometriosis patients (sRAGE 132 ± 31 vs. 105 ± 27 pg/mg protein; VEGF 70 ± 3 vs. 49 ± 18 pg/mg). The authors interpret these local increases as consistent with a role for AGEs–RAGE signaling in endometriosis pathogenesis via VEGF-linked angiogenesis and inflammation, while the limitation is that the measurements are observational and do not establish causality. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it reports altered sRAGE and VEGF concentrations in reproductive tract and peritoneal compartments of women with endometriosis.
