Ultrastructural Evaluation of Eutopic Endometrium of Infertile Women With and Without Endometriosis During the Window of Implantation: A Pilot Study
This pilot study used scanning electron microscopy to evaluate pinopodes in the eutopic endometrium of infertile women with and without endometriosis, finding no significant differences in presence or developmental stage.

This pilot study used scanning electron microscopy to evaluate cell surface patterning—specifically the presence and developmental stage of pinopodes, along with microvilli and ciliated cells—in eutopic endometrium from 12 infertile women (6 with endometriosis and 6 controls) sampled during the window of implantation. Biopsies were obtained with a Pipelle catheter, and group comparisons were performed with Mann-Whitney U tests. The authors found no large differences between groups in pinopode presence or developmental stage, indicating no major structural alterations in the endometrium of infertile women with endometriosis during the implantation window. Limitations included the small sample size. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it directly compares pinopode ultrastructure in eutopic endometrium of infertile women with versus without endometriosis during the window of implantation.
