Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) gene polymorphism and endometriosis in northern Iran
This study investigated ICAM-1 codon 241 polymorphism in northern Iranian endometriosis patients and controls, finding an association between the R241 allele and increased endometriosis susceptibility.

This case-control study evaluated whether intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) gene polymorphism at codon 241 in exon 4 is associated with endometriosis susceptibility in northern Iran. The authors recruited 84 unrelated women with endometriosis and 120 unrelated healthy controls and genotyped the ICAM-1 codon 241 Arg (AGG) versus Gly (GGG) variants using two independent PCR reactions with allele-specific oligonucleotide primers. They found significantly different genotype distributions, with the R241 allele present in 23% of patients versus 6% of controls (P = 0.001; odds ratio 4.67, 95% CI 1.81–12.07), and a trend toward higher R241 frequency in stage IV disease (65% vs 6%; P < 0.0001). The paper’s limitation is that it does not report any functional assays or adjustment for potential confounders beyond the genetic association analysis. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it tests the association of an ICAM-1 codon 241 polymorphism with endometriosis risk and staging in northern Iran.
