Peritoneal VEGF-A expression is regulated by TGF-β1 through an ID1 pathway in women with endometriosis
This study found that peritoneal VEGF-A in women with endometriosis is upregulated by TGF-β1 via the ID1 pathway in mesothelial cells.

This study examined whether peritoneal VEGF-A is regulated by TGF-β1 through the transcriptional regulator ID1 in women with endometriosis, using peritoneal fluid measurements, peritoneal biopsies, and human peritoneal mesothelial cell lines (HPMC and MeT-5A). VEGF-A concentrations were higher in peritoneal fluid from women with endometriosis and positively correlated with TGF-β1 levels; in vitro, physiological TGF-β1 increased VEGFA mRNA and VEGF-A secretion from peritoneal mesothelial cells. The authors found ID1 expression increased in peritoneal biopsies from women with endometriosis and that TGF-β1 increased ID1 expression in mesothelial cells, while siRNA knockdown of ID1 reduced TGF-β1-induced VEGF-A expression and secretion. The paper’s main caveat is that further work is needed to confirm that this TGF-β1–ID1–VEGF-A pathway is the dominant mechanism in vivo because VEGF-A can be regulated by multiple pathways. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it focuses on TGF-β1 regulation of peritoneal VEGF-A via ID1 in women with endometriosis.
