Experimental Endometriosis in the Rat Is Correlated With Colonic Motor Function Alterations but Not With Bacterial Load

The study used an autotransplantation rat model of endometriosis to test whether peritoneal endometriotic lesions associate with colonic inflammation, immune cell recruitment, bacterial burden, and colonic smooth muscle motor function. After sacrifice, the authors assessed endometriotic vesicles, colonic damage, peritoneal fluid white blood cell (WBC) numbers, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, and bacterial counts in colon/jejunum, and measured acetylcholine-stimulated isometric contractility in longitudinal and circular colonic muscle. Compared with controls, endometriosis-experimental animals had significantly greater colonic damage, MPO activity, and WBC numbers, and despite no significant difference in total bacterial load, they showed increased longitudinal muscle tension that correlated with WBC numbers and colonic damage. The authors conclude this links peritoneal endometriosis to altered colonic integrity and function, while the bacterial load results suggest the motility/inflammation changes were not driven by differences in total bacterial burden.
