Innervation of ectopic endometrium in a rat model of endometriosis
Ectopic endometrial growths in a rat model of endometriosis were found to develop autonomic and sensory innervation, with CGRP and SP neurites extending into the cyst lining.

This study utilized a surgically induced rat model to test the hypothesis that ectopic endometrial growths develop their own autonomic and sensory innervation. Immunohistochemical analysis of harvested cysts revealed robust innervation by pan-neuronal markers, with specific sensory fibers expressing CGRP and SP extending into the luminal epithelium alongside sympathetic fibers marked by VMAT. The findings demonstrate that these ectopic tissues establish a neural supply similar to the eutopic uterus, which may contribute to both symptom maintenance and lesion persistence. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — specifically investigating the neural mechanisms underlying pain and growth in ectopic endometrial tissue.
