The paper reviews how ectopias and heterotopies of the hepatobiliary tract—such as splenosis, intrahepatic ectopic pancreatic tissue, adrenohepatic fusion, and rarer entities including hepatic endometriosis/endometrioma and hepatic pregnancy—can present as tumor-like lesions, often complicating diagnosis. It compiles multiple illustrative case reports and literature examples describing these abnormal tissues, including instances where hepatic endometriosis or hepatic endometrioma can be mistaken for malignant disease. A major limitation is that the evidence base is largely retrospective and case-based rather than systematic, so true incidence and best diagnostic strategies are not established. This paper is centrally about endometriosis—specifically, it includes hepatic endometriosis/endometrioma as a rare ectopic tissue that can mimic hepatobiliary tumors.

Abstract

Numerous types of ectopias and heterotopias located to the liver can result in tumor-like lesions. The presence of ectopic splenic tissue in various abdominal organs, including the liver, is termed splenosis. The liver can also contain various types of ectopic pancreatic tissue, ranging from exocrine lobules to small clusters of intrahepatic acinar cells. Adrenal cortex can ectopically adhere to the inferior-posterior capsule of the liver, a condition called adrenohepatic fusion. Other rare ectopic tissue components include thyroid gland ectopia, hepatogonadal fusion, hepatic endometriosis and endometrioma, and hepatic pregnancy. Similar content being viewed by others

My notes (saved in your browser only)

Ask this paper AI returns verbatim quotes from the full text · source: oa-doi-fallback

Answers must be backed by verbatim quotes from this paper's full text. Hallucinated quotes are dropped automatically; if no verbatim passage answers the question, we say so. How this works

Citation neighborhood

Papers in the corpus that this work cites (lower rings, blue) and that cite this one (upper rings, green). Dot size scales with the paper's in-corpus citation count — bigger dot = more influential within the endo/adeno field. Click a dot to open that paper. [ expand to 2 hops ] — adds papers reached through this work's immediate citers/citees. Heavier; up to 60 extra dots.
