Remission of Endometriosis by Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment in Rats

This prospective randomized controlled animal study investigated whether hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) could induce remission of experimentally induced endometriosis in 40 nonpregnant female Wistar-Albino rats. After surgical induction of endometriosis, rats were evaluated at 4 weeks with laparotomy for implant volume measurement and peritoneal fluid collection, then randomized to HBO or control; the HBO group received 2 hours/day for 6 weeks, followed by a final laparotomy with outcomes including implant volume, histopathologic scores, Ki-67 immunohistochemical scores, and peritoneal fluid tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). HBO-treated rats had significantly smaller endometriotic implants (57.4 vs 94.6 mm³), lower histopathologic and Ki-67 scores, and reduced TNF-α levels compared with controls, indicating significant remission. The main limitation stated by design is that this was an experimentally induced rat model, which may not directly translate to human disease.
