Ion Channels in The Pathogenesis of Endometriosis: A Cutting-Edge Point of View
This review analyzes the literature on ion channels in endometriosis, finding evidence for CFTR, aquaporins, and ClC-3 involvement in disease pathogenesis, while TRPs showed no correlation.

This narrative review examined whether a relationship exists between ion channels and the etiopathogenesis of endometriosis, using a MEDLINE/PubMed search (English, inception to November 2019) restricted to ion-channel–specific original and review studies, yielding 88 references. Synthesized evidence highlighted CFTR, which is upregulated in ectopic endometriotic lesions and in Ishikawa cells drives enhanced endometrial cell migration via an NFκB p65–uPAR signaling axis, with the limitation that the migration effects were reported as related to CFTR expression rather than its ion channel function and that direct CFTR–NFκB linkage is debated. The review also discussed transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, reporting altered expression patterns across the menstrual cycle and in endometriosis for several TRP family members, while noting that proliferation and migration assays were not affected by TRP expression and that eutopic versus ectopic expression differences were limited in some studies. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it reviews ion-channel evidence (especially CFTR and TRP channels) and evaluates whether these channels may contribute to ectopic cell migration and invasion in endometriosis.
