Association between endometriosis and polymorphisms in tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), TRAIL receptor and osteoprotegerin genes and their serum levels
Endometriosis in Korean women was associated with lower serum TRAIL and OPG levels but not with polymorphisms in TRAIL, DR, and OPG genes.

This Korean case–control study examined whether endometriosis is associated with polymorphisms in genes encoding tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and its receptors (DR4, DR5), as well as osteoprotegerin (OPG), and whether these genetic variants relate to circulating TRAIL and OPG levels. The authors genotyped multiple TRAIL, DR4, DR5, and OPG polymorphisms in 138 women with endometriosis and 214 women without endometriosis and measured serum TRAIL and OPG, stratifying by endometriosis stage. Genotype distributions and allele frequencies for the tested polymorphisms were not different between groups, regardless of stage, and several polymorphorphisms were not observed at all. Serum TRAIL and OPG levels were significantly lower in women with endometriosis than in those without, with no early versus advanced differences. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it tests associations between endometriosis status and TRAIL/DR/OPG genetic polymorphisms and serum levels in Korean women.
