Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Endometriosis, Psychological Based Intervention: A Systematic Review
This systematic review of five studies found that cognitive behavioral therapy interventions reduced pain sensation, depression, and stress, while improving quality of life for women with endometriosis.

This PRISMA-based systematic review examined studies published between June 2019 and July 2020 that used cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques in individual or group psychological interventions for women with endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain, searching PubMed/Medline, Scielo, Lilacs, and Capes and excluding non-CBT or mixed-technique interventions, reviews, and other irrelevant study types. From 103 unique records and full-text screening, five studies met inclusion criteria, but a meta-analysis was not possible because results were heterogeneous and too few studies reported comparable effect size data. Across the included trials, CBT-informed approaches incorporating psychoeducation and coping/mindfulness/problem-solving strategies (sometimes alongside additional physical or complementary techniques within the same study) were associated with decreased pain and depression and/or stress scores and improvements in aspects of quality of life such as vitality, functioning, emotional well-being, control, and autonomy, though one key limitation noted was insufficient session-by-session protocol detail in at least one randomized trial. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it systematically reviews CBT-based psychological interventions for endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain outcomes.
