Serum biomarker profiles of interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, matrix-metalloproteinase-2, and vascular endothelial growth factor in endometriosis staging

This cross-sectional study evaluated whether serum IL-6, TNF-α, MMP-2, and VEGF levels differ between endometriosis patients in earlier (stage I–II) versus later (stage III–IV) disease, using laparoscopy-diagnosed cases (n=40) and ELISA-measured biomarkers from blood samples taken before surgery. IL-6, TNF-α, and MMP-2 did not show significant mean differences between the stage groups, whereas VEGF was significantly higher in stages III–IV than in stages I–II. VEGF also performed with an AUC of 74.5%, and the authors reported an optimal cut-off of 314.75 pg/mL (sensitivity 78.6%, specificity 69.2%). The paper’s limitation is that it uses a small sample size and does not find stage discrimination for the other measured inflammatory/proteolytic markers.
