Abstract
Post-transcriptional regulation of protein production is increasingly thought to be important in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. MicroRNAs are recently discovered 19-22 nt single-stranded RNAs that bind to specific sequences within messenger RNAs and regulate the translation of these messenger RNAs into proteins. Four microarray studies have explored the role of microRNAs in endometriosis. Three of these studies have carried out an in silico functional analysis to identify potential links between endometriosis-associated microRNAs and their messenger RNA targets. These studies have revealed putative molecular networks that are likely to be regulated by microRNAs in endometriosis and raised the possibility of microRNAs being used diagnostically or therapeutically to improve endometriosis outcomes. This review will describe the broad function of microRNAs, their possible role in endometriosis, and potential future applications of this technology to the treatment and diagnosis of this important disease. © 2012 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.
