Study of dienogest for dysmenorrhea and pelvic pain associated with endometriosis
This study found that orally administered dienogest effectively reduced dysmenorrhea and pelvic pain in endometriosis patients but noted potential side effects of weight gain and uterine bleeding.

This non-randomized prospective study evaluated oral dienogest (2 mg/day) over 6 cycles in 89 reproductive-age women with laparoscopically diagnosed endometriosis who continued to report persistent dysmenorrhea and non-menstrual pelvic pain after surgery. Using a 0–3 verbal rating scale, the authors found that dysmenorrhea disability scores, non-menstrual pelvic pain scores, and analgesic use all significantly decreased by the end of treatment, alongside no clinically relevant changes in serum lipids or liver enzymes. Reported adverse effects included weight gain (63%), irregular uterine bleeding (31.5%, with only 1 discontinuation), and no serious drug-related events otherwise. The paper’s main limitation is its single-arm design without a control comparator. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it tests whether dienogest reduces endometriosis-associated dysmenorrhea and pelvic pain.
