Activation of Hypocretin Neurons in Endometriosis
Endometriosis in mice is associated with increased hypocretin neuron activation and lower body mass compared to sham surgeries.

The paper studied whether experimental murine endometriosis alters activation of hypocretin/orexin (Hcrt) neurons, using mice that underwent endometriosis induction surgery versus sham surgery and then underwent an acute stress challenge. Lateral hypothalamus immunocytochemistry quantified Hcrt neuronal activation by measuring expression of phosphorylated CREB in Hcrt cells, and body composition outcomes were assessed in the context of a high-fat diet. Endometriosis mice showed greater Hcrt neuronal activation than sham mice, and high-fat diet endometriosis mice had lower fat/body weight and fat/lean tissue ratios than control mice; food intake did not differ significantly between endometriosis and sham groups. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it focuses on hypocretin/orexin neuron activation as a potential mediator of systemic behavioral and body-composition changes in a mouse endometriosis model.
