Changes of plasma lipids and lipoprotein levels during danazol treatment for endometriosis
Danazol treatment for endometriosis caused a significant decrease in HDL, a potential increase in LDL, a doubling of the atherogenic ratio, and decreased estradiol and progesterone levels.

This 1983 study evaluated lipid and lipoprotein changes in 62 patients with endometriosis treated daily with 600 mg of danazol. Researchers measured cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL, estradiol, and progesterone before treatment, monthly during therapy, and up to 24 weeks post-therapy. The results indicated a significant decrease in HDL levels by approximately 45% within the first two months, leading to a doubled atherogenic ratio and an increase in mean LDL levels. Five patients developed reversible type IIa hyperlipoproteinemia, while progesterone levels fell significantly despite estradiol remaining within normal midfollicular ranges. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — specifically the metabolic side effects of danazol, which was a primary medical treatment for this condition at the time.
