This paper reports a clinical case of appendiceal endometriosis in a 42-year-old woman who presented with symptoms consistent with acute appendicitis. The authors performed a laparoscopic appendectomy and report a good postoperative outcome, with the diagnosis of endometriosis relying on histology of the removed appendix. As a single case report, the main limitation is the inability to generalize findings or estimate prevalence or treatment effectiveness beyond this individual patient. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it specifically describes appendiceal endometriosis presenting as acute appendicitis and treated via laparoscopic appendectomy.

Abstract

Endometriosis is a relatively common disorder in women of reproductive age; however, appendiceal endometriosis is rare. Thus, a definitive diagnosis is likely to be established only by histology of the appendix. We report a case of endometriosis of the appendix in a 42-year-old woman who presented with symptoms of acute appendicitis. We treated the patient by performing laparoscopic appendectomy, which resulted in a good outcome. Similar content being viewed by others
