Serum tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, monocyte chemotactic protein-1 and paraoxonase-1 profiles in women with endometriosis, pcos, or unexplained infertility
This study examined serum levels of TNF-α, IL-6, MCP-1, and PON-1 in women with endometriosis, PCOS, or unexplained infertility during fertility treatments.

This study measured serum TNF-α, IL-6, MCP-1, and paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) at baseline (day 3) and at the end of FSH stimulation (E2 peak) in 36 women with endometriosis, PCOS, or unexplained infertility undergoing IVF or IUI. Peak IL-6, MCP-1, and PON-1 were positively correlated with E2 peak levels, while TNF-α showed an inverse correlation with estradiol and was lower among those who became pregnant; mean TNF-α was higher in the unexplained infertility group. IL-6 and MCP-1 were higher in women with PCOS than in the endometriosis and unexplained groups, and the authors reported no differences among groups for several baseline measures and PON-1, nor a relationship between PON-1 and endometriosis/PCOS/unexplained infertility. The paper’s limitation, as stated in the abstract, is that it found no evidence of a relationship between circulating cytokines and mild endometriosis. Relevance to endometriosis: endometriosis was included as one of the comparative infertility groups, and the authors specifically report no evidence of a relationship between circulating cytokines with mild endometriosis.
