Characterizing the endometrial fluid cytokine profile in women with endometriosis
Endometrial fluid cytokine profiles, specifically IL-1α, IL-1β, and IL-6, can predict moderate-to-severe endometriosis.

This prospective cohort study compared cytokine and growth factor profiles in aspirated endometrial fluid from women undergoing laparoscopy for benign indications, with endometriosis staged using ASRM criteria (n=60 total; stage 3–4, stage 1–2, or no endometriosis). Using multiplex immunoassay, the authors quantified seven cytokines/growth factors and found no significant differences between controls and stage 1–2 disease, but IL-1α and IL-6 were significantly increased in moderate-to-severe (stage 3–4) endometriosis. A logistic regression combination of IL-1α, IL-1β, and IL-6 predicted stage 3–4 endometriosis (AUC 0.78; sensitivity 75%, specificity 70%), with the caveat that the panel did not predict minimal-to-mild disease. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it characterizes endometrial fluid cytokine profiles and evaluates their ability to predict ASRM stage.
