Evaluation of oxidative stress in endometriosis: A case-control study.
This case-control study found significantly higher serum iron levels in endometriosis patients compared to controls, with iron demonstrating high discriminative ability for diagnosing the condition.

This case-control study enrolled 30 women with endometriosis and 40 matched healthy controls and compared serum oxidative stress marker levels using TBARS for malondialdehyde (MDA), a dinitrophenylhydrazine-based assay for carbonyls, and a ferrozine method for iron. The key finding was that mean serum iron was significantly higher in endometriosis patients than controls (p<0.0001), and ROC analysis showed iron had strong discriminative ability (AUC 0.899; best cut-off 173.3 µg/dl), whereas MDA and carbonyl were higher but not significantly different. The authors’ explicit caveat is that MDA and carbonyl increases did not reach statistical significance in this dataset. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it evaluates serum iron and other oxidative stress markers to test for oxidative stress involvement in endometriosis.
