Abstract

For nearly a century, endometriosis has remained a fascinating yet controversial disease. Clinical opinion and formal research have influenced our understanding of this ubiquitous medical enigma. Since the 1970s, there has been an appreciable rise in the diagnosis of endometriosis attributable to the availability of laparoscopy. Although no one disagrees that symptomatic endometriosis should be treated, the choice of treatment, whether surgical or medical, remains controversial.
