Cytokine Production by Immunocompetent Cells of Peritoneal Fluid in Women with External Genital Endometriosis
Women with external endometriosis exhibit altered peritoneal fluid immune cell ratios and increased IL-1β, TNF-α, and EGF levels, with enhanced IFN-γ production by lymphocytes.

The study evaluated cytokine content in peritoneal fluid and the in vitro cytokine production of peritoneal macrophages and lymphocytes in women with external genital endometriosis. It found that the relative proportions of peritoneal immune cells shifted, with increased lymphoid cell percentage and decreased macrophage content despite high absolute counts of both cell types, and that endometriosis was associated with higher IL-1β, TNF-α, and epidermal growth factor levels in peritoneal fluid and in 24-hour macrophage culture supernatants, while IFN-α remained unchanged. IFN-γ concentrations were not altered in peritoneal fluid but increased in supernatants from lymphocyte cultures. The paper does not explicitly state additional limitations in the provided text. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it characterizes peritoneal cytokine production by macrophages and lymphocytes in women with external genital endometriosis.
