Symptoms of Adenomyosis and Overlapping Diseases
This review of adenomyosis diagnosis, prevalence, and symptoms found heterogeneous diagnostic criteria, a prevalence of 20-88.8% in symptomatic women, and that symptoms attributed to endometriosis may stem from adenomyosis.

This paper systematically reviewed PubMed literature from 1972 to April 2020 to synthesize evidence on adenomyosis diagnosis, prevalence, and symptoms, including studies using pathology, imaging (MRI/TVUS), hysteroscopic or biopsy approaches, and reports of age of onset and concomitant endometriosis. Across 16 included studies, adenomyosis prevalence in symptomatic women was highly variable (about 20% to 88.8%, averaging 30–35%), with most diagnoses reported between ages 32–38, and imaging–pathology correlations described as continuing to evolve. A key limitation highlighted is major heterogeneity in diagnostic criteria and protocols across studies, contributing to ongoing challenges in identification and research, especially where standardized histopathological and imaging definitions are lacking. Relevance to endometriosis: the paper emphasizes that high rates of concomitant endometriosis complicate determining pelvic-pain etiology and notes that symptoms historically attributed to endometriosis may be caused by adenomyosis, though the main focus is adenomyosis symptoms, prevalence, and diagnosis.
