Are Mood and Anxiety Disorders and Alexithymia Associated with Endometriosis? A Preliminary Study
This study found that mood and anxiety disorders, certain psychopathological symptoms, and alexithymia were more frequent in Italian women with endometriosis compared to controls.

This preliminary case-control study compared 37 Italian women with laparoscopically and histologically confirmed endometriosis to 43 endometriosis-negative controls, assessing pain symptoms (VAS), psychiatric disorders via SCID-I DSM-IV, broader psychopathology via SCL-90-R, and alexithymia via TAS-20. The authors found a higher overall prevalence of psychiatric disorders in endometriosis patients, with mood and anxiety disorder categories more frequent, and higher rates of obsessive-compulsive and depression symptoms on SCL-90-R; they also reported higher TAS-20 scores (total score, difficulty identifying feelings, and externally oriented thinking) in patients. Among endometriosis patients, higher chronic pelvic pain VAS scores were associated with alexithymia and with higher TAS-20-related subscales, and correlations were also observed between dyspareunia and difficulty describing/identifying feelings. The study is limited by its small sample size (notably pain subgroup sizes) and some invalid instrument results, which the authors note restrict causal inference; this paper is centrally about endometriosis — evaluating associations between mood/anxiety disorders, psychopathology, alexithymia, and pain in endometriosis patients.
