Progestogens and Endometriosis
Progestogens are used to treat endometriosis symptoms like pain and bleeding, but do not affect infertility and have limited comparative data between different types.

This paper reviews endometriosis biology and the role of progestogens, describing endometriosis as having progesterone-resistant endometrium and an immunologically altered peritoneal microenvironment, and outlining major symptom sequelae such as chronic pelvic pain and infertility. It discusses a likely mechanism of progestogen effects focused on dampening inflammatory reactions around endometriotic deposits, while emphasizing that ectopic tissue cannot decidualize as normal endometrium due to progesterone resistance. The paper states that progestogens are indicated for pain relief and bleeding when long-term or repeated treatment courses are needed, with the advantage of relatively few major side effects, but also notes there is little comparative data across different progestogens and that progestogens have no effect on endometriosis-related infertility. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it specifically reviews how progestogens may work in progesterone-resistant disease and their clinical use for symptoms.
