Abstract

Endometriosis is a benign disease that affects women of re p roductive age, and is characterised by the presence of stro- ma and/or endometrial glands outside the uterus. The origin of this disease is still not well-established despite the nume- rous advances made re g a rding the understanding of its pa- thogeny and physiopathology. An important factor in the development and advance of endometriosis could be a fai- l u re in the immune system tolerance to self-antigens, giving rise to the appearance of an autoimmune phenomenon. S u p p o rting this is the presence of antiendometrial antibodies both in peritoneal fluid and serum of women suffering fro m endometriosis. Induced endometriosis in a Wistar rat expe- rimental model produces immunological alterations similar to those observed in human, such as a reduction in NK acti- v i t y, an increase in pro i n f l a m m a t o ry cytokine production, as well as an increase in angiogenic activity. It is important to develop more studies of endometriosis models, since this will enable us to establish to what extent the antiendometrial anti- bodies are involved in the development and pro g ression of e n d o m e t r i o s i s .
