Analysis of Changes in Serum Levels and Gene Expression Profiles of Novel Adipocytokines (Omentin, Vaspin, Irisin and Visfatin) and Their Correlation with Serum C-reactive Protein Levels in Women Diagnosed with Endometriosis
This study found elevated serum irisin and C-reactive protein levels, alongside reduced visfatin and vaspin gene expression, in women with endometriosis, suggesting potential biomarker roles.

This study investigated whether novel adipocytokines (omentin, vaspin, irisin, and visfatin) differ between 16 women diagnosed with endometriosis and 14 ultrasound-confirmed healthy controls, and whether they correlate with serum C-reactive protein (CRP). Serum omentin, vaspin, and irisin were measured by ELISA, CRP was measured in serum, and visfatin and vaspin gene expression were assessed in whole blood using real-time PCR. The main findings were that serum irisin and CRP were significantly higher in endometriosis, irisin positively correlated with BMI and CRP, and visfatin and vaspin mRNA expression were significantly lower in endometriosis; there were no significant differences in serum omentin and vaspin protein levels. The paper notes limitations including small sample size and the need for larger studies to clarify mechanisms and establish prognostic/biomarker value. This paper is centrally about endometriosis—specifically measuring adipocytokines (including irisin, visfatin, vaspin, and omentin) and relating them to CRP and inflammation-associated gene expression in endometriosis patients.
