Curcumin improves growth factors expression of bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes cultured in peritoneal fluid of women with endometriosis
Curcumin addition to peritoneal fluid from women with endometriosis improved growth factor expression, specifically increasing GDF-9 and KitL while affecting TNFα, in cultured bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes.

This laboratory experimental study cultured bovine cumulus–oocyte complexes in tissue culture medium alone (control), or supplemented with peritoneal fluid from infertile women with endometriosis, with or without added curcumin, then used immunohistochemistry to assess the semi-quantitative expression of GDF-9, Kit ligand, and TNF-α. The peritoneal fluid from infertile women with endometriosis reduced GDF-9 and KitL expression compared with control, while TNF-α increased; adding curcumin partially reversed these effects by increasing GDF-9 and KitL and decreasing TNF-α relative to the peritoneal-fluid-only condition. A key limitation is that only 21 COCs (7 per group) were analyzed and the staining-based assessment is semi-quantitative rather than direct functional outcome measurement. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it tests whether curcumin can modulate oocyte–granulosa growth factor and inflammatory signaling in bovine COCs exposed to endometriosis-associated peritoneal fluid.
