Zusammenfassung Die Endometriose wird allgemein (histologisch) definiert als das Vorkommen von endometrialem Gewebe (Drüse und Stroma) außerhalb seiner physiologischen Lokalisation, dem Cavum uteri. Damit ist zum einen gesagt, daß die Diagnose Endometriose nur dann gestellt werden kann, wenn entsprechende Gewebeveränderungen durch eine Operation (in der Regel eine Laparoskopie) sichtbar gemacht und repräsentative Gewebeareale aus diesen zur histologischen Verifizierung entnommen werden können. Zum anderen erlaubt die histologische Definition keine Aussage über den Krankheitswert von endometrialen Läsionen. Um von einer Krankheit Endometriose sprechen zu können, müssen bestimmte Voraussetzungen in dem Implantat selbst erfüllt sein. Diese umfassen zelluläre Aktivitäten und eine Progression der Veränderungen, wie die Bildung von Verwachsungen, oder eine Interferenz mit normalen physiologischen Prozessen (Audebert et al. 1992).
